What Is the Credit Card Grace Period?

The grace period of a credit card is the interest-free timeframe from your credit card statement date to the payment due date. Your card’s grace period will remain active for at least 21 days. During this time, you can make new purchases without accruing interest.

Understanding the grace period is an essential part of using a credit card safely and responsibly. It allows you to build credit and earn rewards without paying extra to the bank.

How to Remain Eligible for Your Grace Period

To maintain your grace period, you must pay your full statement balance on time every month.

Here is how the timing and eligibility work:

  1. The billing cycle closes: Your credit card issuer tallies all of your charges and sends your bill with the statement balance.
  2. The grace period starts: By law, your credit card company must give you at least 21 days between the date it generates your statement and the date your payment is due.
  3. You pay by the due date: If you pay the full statement balance by this date, your grace period renews for the next month, and you owe zero interest on your purchases.

In short, if you pay your statement balance in full and on time, you will remain eligible for your grace period.

How You Lose Your Grace Period and How to Get It Back

If you only pay the minimum payment — or any amount less than the full statement balance — you lose your grace period for the following billing cycle.

When you lose your grace period, two things happen:

  1. Interest on the remaining balance: You have to pay interest on the unpaid balance you carried over from the previous month.
  2. Immediate interest on new purchases: You have to pay interest on any new purchases, starting from the time you make them.

To restore your grace period, you must pay your credit card bill in full for one or more consecutive billing cycles. The exact number of timely consecutive payments required depends on your card issuer and agreement terms.

Pro tip: Find your grace period

The best way to confirm the details of your card’s grace period is to check the Schumer box in your credit card agreement. This disclosure box details all of your account’s rates and fees. You can find the grace period terms in the section labeled “How to Avoid Paying Interest on Purchases,” “Grace Period,” or a similar name.

Maximizing Your Interest-Free Time

By planning big purchases carefully around your credit card’s grace period, you can maximize the amount of time you have to pay your balance.

If you make a large purchase immediately after your billing cycle closes, that transaction will appear on your statement in the following month. This strategy will give you about 30 days, plus your grace period, to pay for your purchase without interest, which could span over multiple paychecks.

Important Exceptions to Know

Scenario Does the Grace Period Apply? What Happens?
New Purchases and You Have Paid Your Balance in Full YES You have 21 days or more to pay without interest.
New Purchases and You Carry a Balance NO Interest is charged immediately on new purchases.
Cash Advances NO Interest starts accruing the moment you withdraw the cash.
Balance Transfers NO Interest starts immediately unless you have a special zero percent introductory offer.

Grace Period vs. Late Payment

It is important to understand that a credit card’s grace period exists to help you avoid interest rather than fees. The grace period for other types of financing, such as mortgages, gives you time to pay your balance without a late fee. This is not the case with credit cards.

Credit cards do not have a grace period for the minimum payment. As a result, if you fail to pay at least the minimum amount by the due date, your credit card issuer will likely charge you a late fee and interest, regardless of whether your grace period was active.
